The Turner Mission

The mission of The Janet Turner Print Museum is to enhance the understanding and appreciation of the visual arts among the University’s students and faculty, the greater Chico community and the citizens of the region.

The Goals of The Turner Museum

James Coignard; Deux Mannequins Otages; embossed, mixed media The University and the North State have a treasure in the Janet Turner Print Museum. This collection of fine art prints illustrates printing techniques across six centuries and forty countries. It represents the artistic imagination of a vast array of cultures and artists, and serves as a singular resource for our region.

No other collection like it exists north of the large urban centers of Sacramento and San Francisco.

To care for this collection and to plan for its bright future, the Board of Directors and curator Catherine Sullivan completed a MAP study in 2002, and have since been implementing the recommendations of reviewer Lawrence Fong, Associate Director, Oregon Museum of Art.

Our major efforts over the past few years have been focused on increasing the size of the board of directors, updating our by-laws and mission statement, increasing our visibility, educating the community about the true nature of this remarkable collection, searching diligently for a new home for the Museum, continuing and expanding our national print competition, building our Summer Art Academy, and developing our educational program for students in the community.

In the immediate future we will be engaged in a major curatorial survey of the collection to determine its strengths and weaknesses to aid our continued collection of new work, expanding our outreach efforts, continuing our efforts to raise scholarship donations for students in the print making area, and redoubling our efforts to find a suitable new space for our expanded activities. The Janet Turner Print Museum will continue to thrive and grow as new initiatives are undertaken and completed.
